Just when we thought the cannabis plant couldn't give us anymore, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)-O-acetate arrives in the cannabis market, to intrigue and interest the masses. THC-O-acetate is derived from hemp, one of the fastest growing plants around. Already there are THC-O-acetate products entering the cannabis market. You can buy things like THC-O flower, THC-O oil, THC-O edibles, THC-O vapes, and more, online in the UK and Ireland.
Although we are only just being awoken to THC-O-acetate, it's been around for a long time. Between 1945 (the year the second World War ended), and 1975, the US Army carried out some experiments. The experiments became known as the Edgewood Arsenal Experiments.
Researchers discovered that THC acetate ester could be derived from THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is strongly psychoactive alone, and is known to give mind-altering effects. However, THC-O-acetate is 3 times as potent as THC, giving it a significant robust kick.
Globally, it is widely accepted that THC is illegal. In recent years the availability of prescriptions for specific THC medication became available in the UK in 2018. It has taken years of campaigning, and many high court hearings for this ground-breaking rule to be endorsed, and those in receipt of such prescriptions enjoy a better quality of life, by all accounts. However, the criteria to be eligible for such a prescription, which is available from the NHS (National Health Service), is very stringent. Progress seems to be slow, because since the change in law in 2018, very few have been successful candidates.
The legality of THC-O seems to sit in somewhat of a grey area at the moment. As noted, it is said to be 3 times the potency of THC, in fact THC-O is known for the psychedelic experience it gives. The confusion lies in it's origin. THC-O is a derivative of the hemp plant, and as long as THC is <0.3%, all of hemp's products are legal.
